Ain’t liken this tow dolly/rear wheel drive set up so much. We are in a bad situation.
Last night it poured, poured and poured. The interior of the campground had lakes
ankle deep in the sites. Everything is
wet and sandy. Note to self: always get an outside site, not inside. Outside sites are dry.
So, we hooked up the MH and dolly and pulled out of the
site. Under Dave’s direction, the Caddy backed
up to the dolly. It usually takes seven
to ten tries to get lined up perfectly (within a ½” tolerance of the duct tape
on the dolly).
Finally the Caddy is
lined up and I’m told to back up. At
first I couldn’t get any traction.
Needed to pull forward about 1” then back up. Then the ramps slid off to the side from the
Caddy’s spinning wheels. Move forward,
realign the ramps, back up. After
several attempts, the Caddy finally lurched to the top and right on over! Now the back wheels are hanging over the back
of the dolly and we aren’t going anywhere!
Not a pretty sight.
Went over to talk to the CG Host (we know their job). They came over with their cart and radioed
the office. As we sat and waited to see
if there was a jack in the neighborhood, one of the campers walked out of his
site. He said, “Yeah, I’ve done that
before with my truck. I blocked the
front wheels and drove the trailer out from under the truck. You might not want to do that with the Caddy.” Dave said that was a possibility.
Then two guys came out from another campsite. One had a tee shirt which advertised a tire
company. They were fabulous. Brought their jacks over and blocks of
wood. They spent an hour jacking up the
rear of the car as Dave placed blocks of wood under the wheels. Finally the wheels were almost level with the
trailer. Dave put the car in neutral and
they pushed it back on the trailer.
About this time Good Sam showed up. The tow truck driver helped Dave put the
straps on the rear wheels and we were out of the park by 10:15AM.
I’m going to start looking for a front wheel drive car that
can be pulled straight up on the dolly.
This backing up isn’t great.
We’ve already split the bumper from the previous dolly when the Caddy
pulled forward and the stop hooked the rear bumper. Also these dollys should
have more of a lip to stop the tries or at least give you a jolt!
Life on the road! And
we’ve barely started. Got another month
or so of taking the car on and off the dolly!
