AMERICANA AT HENRY FORD MUSEUM

The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village (formally the Edison Institute) is a large indoor/outdoor museum complex and a National Historic Landmark.

It is more than a museum.  Like.......Disney World is more than an amusement park!  It is located across from the Ford Motor Company headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.  A day in the museum immerses you in American history and folklore.

The property has an array of famous homes, machinery exhibits and Americana exhibits to preserve items of historical significance and portraits of the industrial revolution.

ROSA PARKS' BUS

When Presidents campaigned from train stops!  (Those were the days!)

Remember when they were .15!

Included in the collection is the John F Kennedy presidential limousine, Abraham Lincoln’s chair from the Ford Theater, Thomas Edison’s laboratory, the Wright Brothers bicycle shop and the Rosa Parks bus.

This would still be a fun way to camp!  1959 VW Westfalla!

Henry Ford said of his museum:

I am collecting the history of our people as written into things their hands made and used.... When we are through, we shall have reproduced American life as lived, and that, I think, is the best way of preserving at least a part of our history and tradition..

EDISON INSTITUTE

Thomas Edison and Henry Ford along with Firestone were good friends.  The Edison Institute was dedicated by President Herbert Hoover on Oct 21, 1929, the 50th anniversary of the first successful incandescent light bulb. Among the people in attendance to the dedication were Marie Curie, George Eastman, John D. Rockefeller, Wille Rogers and Orville Wright.  The dedication was broadcast on the radio with listeners encouraged to turn off their electric lights until the switch was flipped at the Museum.

GREENFIELD VILLAGE

Nearly 100 historical buildings were moved to this property from their original locations and arranged in a “village” setting.  It shows how Americans lived and worked since the founding of the country.  Buildings range from the 17th century to the present with many staffed by costumed interpreters.

We were getting tired to walking so took a ride on the 1913 Herschell Spillman Carousel.

The craft buildings include pottery, glass blowing, tin shops.  The Village has 240 acres of land with only 90 acres used for the attraction and the rest are forest, river and pastures for sheep and horses.

Definitely the Village can be done on the second day.  There is so much to see.

This is the boarding house that was located across from Thomas Edison's laboratory.  Many of Edison's technicians lived in this house while they worked at the institute.

To say it was an exhausting day is an understatement.  This complex is easily be done in two days! In fact it should be done in two days!

Our time in Dearborn is up and now we are off to Indiana .... why?? .... because I've never been there!

FRANKENMUTH - MICHIGAN'S BAVARIAN TOWN

We departed Leelanau Monday morning and made the slow progression home, by way of several stops.  Our first stop was Frankenmuth Michigan in Saginaw County.  The architecture in the downtown area reflects their Bavarian heritage.  The area was settled in 1845 by  immigrants from Bavaria.

STREET ART .... $2500 .... OR A PICTURE IS WORTH $2500!

The downtown area is lined with shops on both sides and two popular restaurants; Zender’s and the Bavairan Inn.

 BEAUTIFUL STREET SCAPES!

HUSBANDS WAITING IN THE SHADE FOR THEIR SHOPPING WIVES!

BAVARIAN ARCHITECTURE UP AND DOWN THE STREET

BAVARIAN INN & SHOPS

AT THE END OF THIS STREET IS  A HUGE SILO!

Apparently the Bavarian Inn was originally founded by the Zender Family and then they opened a second restaurant across the street.

The “big deal” is the all-you-can-eat family style dinners,  dating back to mid 1800’s, featuring “famous fried chicken”.  We read the menus and decided that was way too much food for us!

 ZENDER'S

Ended up eating at the Bavarian Inn where we could order off the luncheon menu.  We had the Frankenmuth Sampler consisting of Schnitzel (which is really fried pork loin ala Ohio), sauerbraten and the “world famous” fried chicken.  Included were cheese-potato puffs and sauerkraut.  The absolutely best part of the meal was the beer.  In fact, if it weren’t for the beer, my tongue would still be stuck to the roof of my mouth.  To say the food was unremarkable is to be kind!

Didn’t take us long to finish up and we then drove up to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store.  It was huge and endless.

The ornament section was mind boggling!  Any and all (legal) special interests were represented on the Christmas balls.  It was fun to walk through and we can now “check that block”.

It was a short stay but we saw all we came to see.  Now we are in Ypsilanti Mi at the Detroit-Greenville RV Park which is about 30 minutes from the Henry Ford Museum ..... which is our next stop!

MAGICAL NORTHERN MICHIGAN .... OUR LAST DAZE

Our stay in Leelanau is drawing to a close so Saturday and Sunday were full of activities in spite of the weather!  Saturday was the Leland Heritage Festival featuring antique cars and boats.  Earlier in the week, Saturday's forecast was for sunny skies but it ended up with laden skies and a brisk breeze coming off Lake Michigan.

We walked among the beautiful antique cars and beautifully finished antique boats then left for Harry & Stephanie’s home for cocktails.   A word about the “antique” boats …. some were within my age!  I guess I’ve become an antique!

I think my Father had one of these boats!

Boy Scouts in Leland area built this beautiful canoe

Doesn't it look like it's going to snow???

Sunday started out again with laden skies and windy but by about 3:30 the wind died down and patches of blue were starting to appear.

RON, JOANIE & BETH .... RON & BETH ARE PROTECTING US FROM HUNTERS!

Ron, Joanie, Beth, Harry & Stephanie picked us up to hike Pyramid Point,  a ½ mile hike up the dunes to a beautiful (another one) overlook of Lake Michigan.

The dune is at a 45 degree angle to the Lake so going down must be a blast and coming back up a bitch!

Off across the water Ron pointed out the Manitou Islands.  Harry pointed to a marker as this is a ship’s channel for freighters.  Unfortunately we didn’t see any freighters up close, but in the distance we could see two freighters passing each other.

As usual Joanie prepared for the apocalypse with help from Stephanie and a contribution of wine from me.

 CHEERS!

A blanket was laid out and we all flopped down, drinking our gin, wine or beer and snacking on peanuts and sesame sticks.

Occasionally the sun would come out and shine on the dunes.  Ron found his spot in the sun!!!!!

Beth & Ron enjoying the view .... and the views here never disappoint!

Doesn’t get any better than this!

MAGICAL NORTHERN MICHIGAN ........... SALMON FISHING!!!

A NIGHT ON THE WATER

After a busy “shop til you drop” afternoon with Joanie, we regrouped at Ron & Joanie’s place for a night on the water on Harry & Stephanie’s 32’ Tiara.  What an unbelievable treat this was!!!!

GO BLUE! (Michigan Fan!!)

The boat is beautiful, just the right size for doing anything, but gets less fuel efficiency than the MH!  OH WELL!

Ron's ready to go!

CAPTAIN HARRY

We clamored on board around 6:30 and headed about four miles out into Sutton’s Bay.

Ron then proceeded to set the fishing lines as Harry called off the depths of the salmon…..80’ – 100’ meanwhile Joanie pulled out the snacks and cracked the beers!

JOANIE & STEPHANIE

We trolled up and down on an absolutely beautiful, balmy night watching the sun sink lower in the sky.

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE!

The salmon will start biting after sunset…..everyone was sure.

HARRY & STEPHANIE

Sunset was at 7:45, 75 minutes from where it was when we came up in August!  The fish seemed to be deeper than our lines and not very hungry tonight.

It didn’t matter though.  Sunset was gorgeous

and the harvest moon came up over the boat.

We finished up around 8:30

Came back for pizza and beer before heading back to our homes.

LIFE IS GOOD!
