We're in Herkimer, NY at the entrance of the Adirondacks National Park and on the Erie Canal. and......you can’t beat the weather. Temps in the low 70’s with low 50’s at
night. Now this is what I’m talkin’
about! It is suppose to warm up into the
high 80’s by Sunday but we’ll be heading north to 1000 Islands so hopefully
will miss the hot weather.
Our mission today….to drive into Utica and find the Utica
Coffee Roasters because we’re running out of coffee beans. Oh Poo.
What we’ll do for coffee. Utica
is about 20 minutes from Herkimer and Dave plugged the address into TomTom.
Traveling with TomTom is always an adventure and today was
no exception. We headed off the
interstate into Utica and I’m immediately reminded why we referred to drivers
from NY as “those NY drivers”.
Growing up in Connecticut we were burdened with being
sandwiched between “those Massachusetts drivers” and “Those New York Drivers”. When I became a resident of the Berkshires in Massachusetts it
became “those flatlanders” and “those NY drivers”. NY was always in the mix! To them we're probably, "those damn Floridians can't get out of their own way!"
So….we were heading for an intersection and the light went
yellow. Dave stopped only to have the
guy behind us lay on his horn because he had not run the red light. That wasn’t enough, we turned right as did
our impatient follower and he flashed his high beams on us as he swerved around
us on the right side and passed us. Dave was amazed the first time drivers did
this to him. Up here, if you’re turning
left, everyone behind you takes the shoulder and passes you on the right. No one waits for you to make the turn! Yes….I remember it all well.
Anyway, TomTom led us down Genesee Street looking for
92. However, 92 was a lovely home
converted into insurance agency offices.
We drove up and down looking for Utica Roasters and couldn’t find it. Since
Dave didn’t copy down their phone number
and we left our wifi stuff back at the MH we pretty much gave up and headed out
of Utica.
TomTom took us downtown and then had us turn right, left, left
so that we went in a circle then left down a narrow alley. Just as I was groaning that TomTom did it
again I looked up and we were behind Utica Roasters! Couldn’t have done that if we tried. Obviously the address on line is not where
they are located!
We bought a pound of Sumatra beans for $20.00 and wish we were back in NSB at Hottie’s Coffee on Canal Street where you can get all kinds of beans, freshly roasted, for about $13/lb. Go to Hottie’s if you’re in NSB. We really want them to stay in business!
Gotta do what you gotta do for a good cup of Joe!
