Just so no one thinks that all we do is drink, flitting from one winery to another, this morning we dedicated our day to the great outdoor wonders.
Watkins Glen State Park is the scene of a beautiful gorge and I am pleased to say we hiked to the top and back down, two miles, and lived to tell! Within the two miles, Glen Creek descends 400 feet past 200 foot cliffs generating 19 waterfalls along its course.
The falls are spectacular. The trail includes 800 steps and winds over and under the waterfalls through the spray of Cavern Cascade.
This suspension bridge is 85 feet above the creek. We wound our way up to this bridge and then headed back down.
Spiral Gorge is a dark narrow passage with dripping springs, sculptured pools and thin Pluto Falls named for the ancient Roman lord of the underworld.
We hiked back out, climbing back down Jacobs Ladder to the lower entrance. This was really something to walk through.
We headed back to the RV for lunch and Billy visit and nap. Having successfully rested up we headed up towards Wagner's Winery & Brewery to a distillery we saw on the way in. In this distillery they make Vodka, Gin, Bourbon and Whiskey as well as liquors. We tried most of them but compared to Kentucky they were not the same. Kentucky bourbon is so rich in flavor and history, it is truly a hard act to follow. Their bourbon was aged for about 18 months in charred barrels then finished off in chardonnay barrels. I'm not a good judge because I don't drink vodka, gin or whiskey so had to rely on Dave's experienced taste buds.
We enjoyed the people in the tasting room. They were dragging in cardboard cartons and reading instructions on how to build their cardboard boats for the regatta on Saturday. Dave shared his personal experience of building a cardboard boat at the Westerheide summer party several years ago. Something about life preservers sandwiched between two floors. We determined that might be illegal! I'm sorry we won't be here to watch this regatta.
It was still early afternoon so we headed back to Wagner's for some beer ... and root beer. We shared a beer flight which was six of their seven beers and sat out on the back deck, breezes blowing up from the Lake, enjoying our afternoon beers. The last time we were here they had run out of root beer but had some this time. However, I would have had to purchase it in a grog which, once opened, had to be refrigerated and drunk fairly quickly. My RV refrigerator was pretty full so passed on the grog and settled for a glass.
I mentioned that this root beer is so rich you don't need to add ice cream to it. The bartender said they add vanilla to the root beer so that's probably why it tastes like a root beer float. It was certainly good.
We picked up some bacon dog treats for Billy. IT IS, AFTER ALL, THIS FIRST BIRTHDAY!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BILLY!
